Project Description

 

 

MANHOOD: Trail Art Residency is a city-wide, site-responsive residency unfolding across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

​

This edition explores manhood as a plural, unstable, and evolving condition—shaped by culture, migration, memory, power, vulnerability, and contradiction.

​

Rather than defining masculinity, this project invites artists to question it, embody it, resist it, or reimagine it.

The residency operates as a distributed trail:

each artist creates a work in a location of their choosing—public or private, physical or digital—forming a network of artworks across the city.

​

Together, these works become a living map of manhood, experienced through movement, encounter, and reflection.

Call for Participation

 

Are you an artist, performer, or storyteller interested in exploring manhood through your own lens?

Join MANHOOD: Trail Art Residency—a collaborative, city-based experience where diverse voices come together to create a multi-sited artistic trail across Toronto.

Who Should Apply

​

• Visual artists, performers, filmmakers, sound artists, writers, and interdisciplinary practitioners and Activists

• Artists engaging with masculinity, gender, identity, migration, the body, or social roles

• Individuals from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences

• Artists open to dialogue, experimentation, and collective presence

• All gender identities are welcome

What’s Required

 

1. Create one artwork responding to the theme manhood

2. Present the work in a location of their choice within Toronto or the GTA
   (this may include a room, studio, public site, or digital platform)

3. Share access details so the work can be included in the trail map

4. Participate in at least one collective gathering (online or in person)

5. Provide documentation (photo, video, or audio)

6. Optionally: host visitors, activate the work, or join a closing event

You Will Receive
